Somerset’s Vegetarian Tartar a Stunner

The team behind restaurants such as Boka and Momotaro has opened Somerset, its latest project next to the gleaming new Viceroy Hotel in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood. The restaurant features an all-American menu, but I thought two dishes in particular stood out. I asked Chef Lee Wolen to show me how, exactly, he makes them.

Korean BBQ in Schaumburg

I absolutely love barbecue, but I’m especially fond of Korean-style. That’s because the beef is always thinly-sliced, cooked over high-heat, and always comes with a large assortment of vegetables. One of my new favorites is in Schaumburg, past the IKEA and not far from Medieval Times.

Lobster Rolls at Merchandise Mart

Lobster rolls are all over the Eastern Seaboard, but there are several places in Chicago now making decent versions. These traditional sandwiches, served in top-loaded hot dog buns, are now showing up at the Merchandise Mart, thanks to a New York City-based chain that is hoping to plant a few more stores here.
