A Taste of Wisconsin’s Supper Clubs Coming To Chicago
Like a lot of my fellow UW-Madison graduates, I occasionally pine for a little reminder of my carefree days among the cheese curds, fish frys and cheap beer. Thankfully, L. Woods Tap & Pine Lodge is bringing the taste of Wisconsin’s north woods supper clubs to the Chicago area each week beginning this Friday.
Midwest supper clubs were restaurants found along dirt roads in Wisconsin’s north woods. The restaurant’s “Wisconsin Fridays” menu will feature the simple, traditional foods of that era on its lunch and dinner menus.
Meals start with specials on Wisconsin Old Fashioned cocktails and Schlitz drafts.
Appetizers include fried cheese curds, coated in Ritz crackers and saltines; the Wisconsin Smorgasbord of smoked sausage, deviled eggs, kidney bean salad, Merkt’s cheese ball, corn relish, house cured pickles, carrots, celery and red pepper cream cheese dip; and a smoked sausage platter with smoked bratwurst and knockwurst, German potato salad, braised cabbage and bacon, and homemade coleslaw.
The Wisconsin Friday menu, just in time for Lent, also offers two types of fish fry: Schlitz beer battered fried haddock and fried lake perch with salt and vinegar fries. Rounding off the meal, for dessert they’re offering a 150-year Wisconsin State Fair staple: the cream puff.
