Tokyo-to-Kyoto Train Food
If you’re headed to Kyoto, chances are you’re taking the bullet train from Tokyo Station, riding one of the impressive Shinkansen trains. I know this sounds crazy coming from an American, but be sure to buy something to eat from the train station before you depart. They do sell food on the trains, but the quality from either Tokyo or Shinagawa stations will be far better. The ride is only about 2.5 hours, but I think you’ll be pretty amazed at how good (and intricate) the bento boxes are, even for commuters. Train food is a major part of the Japanese eating experience.
