Chicago Market Takes Thanksgiving Locally

Although Chicago Market has yet to secure a precise home, the co-op has already garnered more than 600 “owners” since its inception last summer. To further entice potential stakeholders, the founders are hosting a series of pop-ups in line with the market’s mission: to provide a spacious grocery store stocked with local produce, meat and dairy – not to mention a bulk section, liquor department, juice and coffee bar, and an education center.

Potential owners (or just anyone) can experience the store’s first pop-up tomorrow afternoon at The Foxhole in Lincoln Square. Styled as an indoor farmers market, the event features six farms, including Genesis Growers and Seedling Fruit, plus a half dozen other vendors purveying everything from heirloom preserves, candies and cakes, to hot sauceflowers and fine dairy.

“In our eventual brick-and-mortar grocery store, there won’t be farmstands from individual farmers,” says board member Anthony Todd, “but it will be possible to create your entire holiday meal – indeed, any meal – from local, sustainable products.”

And yes, there will be turkeys. Birds from Meadow Haven Farm in Sheffield, IL are still available for pre-order with an RSVP.

Guests who become an owner at the pop-up will receive $10 toward their purchase and in true Thanksgiving spirit can also support Edgewater’s Care for Real pantry with a direct donation of local food.
