“Surf & Turf” Cooking Classes at Butcher & the Burger

Looking to embrace your inner carnivore? Chef Allen Sternweiler of Butcher & the Burger is going to start teaching butchery classes on Monday nights, starting in February. Classes are held at 7:30 p.m. in the chef’s prep kitchen at the Lincoln Park restaurant, located at 1021 W. Armitage Ave.

In February, classes will focus on surf-and-turf pairings, beginning on February 6th with a pre-Valentine’s Day ‘how-to’ on buying, preparing and cooking a beef tenderloin and lobster dinner. The class costs $125 a person.

For Valentine’s Day, a special Tuesday class will be held for couples. They’ll get hands-on experience following expert instructions with cuts of tenderloin and live Maine lobster. The class, at $225 a couple, will begin with Champagne and chocolates and end with a meal featuring the evening’s work.

On Monday, February 20, Chef Govind Armstrong will join Sternweiler for the month’s final ‘Surf & Turf’ cooking class. They will explain and demonstrate pairing unique seafoods with rare animal proteins. Students who attend the $225 class will be served a three-course meal illustrating the methods taught, and will receive a vintage Butcher & the Burger cooler full of ingredients showcased that evening, so they can test their new skills at home.

Classes continue into March with a ‘Mardi Gras Fish Monger’ class on Monday, March 5th on selecting, preparing and cooking various fish in their home kitchens, for $100 per student.

Space is limited, so students must register in advance by calling General Manager Preston Owen at (773) 697-3735. Classes are BYOB and confirmed attendees will receive pairing suggestions. Visit Butcher & the Burger’s website for more details.
